Ingredient Notes
- Homemade Oreo Crust - A mixture of crushed Oreos and coconut oil.
- Chocolate Chips - I use semi-sweet, but you could also use dark or milk chocolate chips.
- Flour - All-purpose flour, but you can substitute for gluten intolerances.
- Butter - Salted. If you only have unsalted, add a ¼ teaspoon of salt to the recipe.
- Whole Milk - For a rich and creamy taste.
- Eggs - The binding agent and to add froth.
- Vanilla - Adding just a dash will bring up the flavor palate.
- Powdered Sugar - Prevents lumping and adds to the creamy texture.
- Heavy Cream - Creates the perfect creamy toppings.
How to Make Mississippi Mud Pie
Combine the crushed Oreos and coconut oil in a small bowl.
Press the Oreo mixture into the bottom of a pie dish. Set aside.
In a separate, larger mixing bowl, melt together the butter, milk, chocolate chips, and vanilla.
Whisk in the eggs until fully incorporated into the batter. Gently fold in the flour and powdered sugar until the batter is smooth with no lumps.
Pour the batter over the Oreo crust and bake until you see cracks on the top.
Allow the brownie layer to cool for an hour in the fridge.
Once cooled, whip the heavy cream into stiff peaks with the remaining powdered sugar. Spread the freshly whipped cream over the top of the brownie layer.
Sprinkle with chocolate chips and pecans, serve, and enjoy!
To serve the pie, garnish it with a chocolate ganache, pecans, Oreo cookie crumbles, chocolate chips, or a white chocolate drizzle for some extra flare.
How to Store and Serve Mud Pie
Cover the pie with plastic wrap or place in an air-tight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When fresh, the mud pie can stay out on the counter for about 30 minutes before it should be placed into the fridge. Letting the pie sit out for too long may cause the whipped cream to become too soft.
Recipe Tips
- You can use the bottom of a glass to really press the Oreo crust down and make sure that it won’t fall apart when you serve the pie.
- If you want a richer chocolate flavor, you can sub the semi-sweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips. Likewise, if you don’t want it to be as rich, you can use milk chocolate chips.
- It is important to let the brownie layer cool all the way, so it does not melt and absorb the whipped cream.
Frequently Asked Questions
The creators of the pie thought the appearance of the pie reminded them of the muddy clay along the banks of the Mississippi River!
No. This pie calls for eggs as the binding ingredient and makes the texture more like a brownie. A no-bake Mississippi Mud Pie would use something like sweetened condensed milk to keep the pie together and have a silk pie texture.
It absolutely can! You can use gluten free Oreos and a gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour.
