What Are Totchos?
Totchos are a delicious mix of tater tots and nachos, hence the name! This genius dish replaces tortilla chips with tater tots to give new flavor to a classic dish. You can add different toppings to totchos, but in this recipe we are making loaded totchos with a barbecue twist!
These loaded tater tots start with precooked tots and pulled pork. All you have to do is throw the ingredients together on a pan and broil until the cheese is melted.
The tangy BBQ pork is delicious with the gooey cheddar cheese. You can serve this dish as a game day appetizer, at a summer barbeque, or easy weeknight dinner. It is sure to become a crowd favorite!
Ingredient Notes
Please take a look at the printable recipe card below for all ingredients, specific measurements, and complete instructions.
- Tater Tots—Cooked according to package directions. If you don't have tater tots you could use french fries or waffle fries.
- Cheddar Cheese—I like to use sharp cheese, but mild or medium will work as well.
- Green Onions—Diced and used as a garnish.
- BBQ Pulled Pork—You can find this pre-made at the store. I like to use Jack Daniels BBQ pulled pork because it is tender, juicy, and easy to heat up, but you can use your favorite brand or make it yourself! Try my Instant Pot BBQ Pulled Pork recipe.
How to Make Pulled Pork Totchos
If you're using store-bought pulled pork, cook according to the package directions.
Cook your tater tots following the package directions in the oven or air fryer.
Once pulled pork and tater tots are done cooking, set your oven to broil.
Spread your tater tots into a single layer on a baking pan. Top the tater tots with the pulled pork and cheddar cheese.
Cook the totchos until the cheese is fully melted. Remove from the oven and top your totchos with diced green onions.
In addition to topping your totchos with diced green onion, you can also top the dish with some extra BBQ sauce before serving! I like to use Head Country or Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce, but any brand will taste amazing.
Storing and Reheating
These totchos are best served fresh, since they will lose their crispness if reheated. However, if you happen to have any leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
I recommend reheating them in an air fryer, if you have one, to retain the same texture and crispiness as when you first made them. You can heat them up for 5 minutes at 350°F.
Recipe Tips
- Heat up the pulled pork according to the package directions before adding it to the baking pan.
- Keep an eye on your totchos while they are baking. They will not need very long in the oven since you are just waiting for the cheese to melt.
- You can use sharp, mild, or medium cheddar cheese. Switching up the cheese you use is an easy way to customize the flavor of these totchos. In addition to cheddar you can use pepper jack, Colby jack, and queso.
- You can add as much pulled pork as you like! I like this recipe's tot-to-pulled pork ratio, but you can pile on as much meat as you want.
What to Serve With Totchos
Pulled pork totchos are usually a main dish or appetizer. You can serve them with any side such as Bacon Ranch Coleslaw, or a fresh garden salad.
