Ingredients

See printable recipe card below for specific measurements and complete instructions.

  • Yukon gold potatoes - These are my top choice for mashing with their buttery flavor and creamy texture but you can also use Russet potatoes.
  • Chicken broth - I like the flavor the chicken broth adds but you can also use vegetable broth.
  • Butter - For best results use butter and not margarine.
  • Minced garlic - Adds additional flavor to the mashed potatoes.
  • Heavy cream - I used heavy cream but you can also use regular whipping cream, half and half or whole milk. Heavy cream makes creamier potatoes.
  • Cheddar cheese - You can use mild or sharp cheddar cheese.

How To Make Slow Cooker Cheesy Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes then cut into one-inch pieces.
  2. Add the chopped potatoes to the bowl of the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Next add the garlic and the chicken broth to the potatoes and toss to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on high for four hours.
  5. When the potatoes are cooked and fork-tender, add the butter and stir to melt.
  6. Use a hand-held potato masher to mash the potatoes then stir to mix the potatoes and broth.
  7. Slowly add in the warm heavy cream and mash until potatoes reach the right consistency and are smooth and creamy.
  8. Add the shredded cheese and stir to combine.
  9. Taste to see if you want to add additional salt and pepper.

How To Store

Store - Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. I do not recommend freezing mashed potatoes.

Reheat - You can reheat in the microwave. If the potatoes seem dry add a little milk or butter to add back in some moisture.

Variations

Dairy Free - Use Almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk in place of heavy cream. Omit the butter and replace with your favorite non-dairy spread. Instead of cheddar cheese use Vegan cheese blend.

Loaded Potatoes - Make a potato bar with your favorite toppings. Top your potatoes with bacon, shredded meat, cheese, sour cream and green onions.

Cheese Swaps - In place of cheddar cheese try Monterey Jack or grated Parmesan cheese. For a spicy kick use Pepper Jack cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Potatoes Work Best In The Slow Cooker?

The best choices for cooking potatoes in the slow cooker are Yukon gold potatoes and Russet potatoes. These yield smooth fluffy potatoes and have less chance of becoming gummy.

Do I Have To Peel The Potatoes?

If you are using Yukon gold potatoes you can leave the skin on if you like the texture. The skins do have benefits of fiber and nutrition in them. However, I would not recommend leaving the skins on if you are using Russet potatoes as their skins tend to be thicker and tough so they are best peeled.
