- Chicken: I used thinly sliced chicken in this recipe.

- Bell Peppers: I love using green and red bell peppers.
- Seasonings: You will need smoked paprika, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper.
- Onion: White or yellow.
- Worcestershire sauce: This gives the chicken Philly sandwiches a great flavor.
- Provolone cheese- I love using provolone cheese with this recipe, but use your favorite cheese.
- Hoagie rolls: I used Pepperidge Farm brand.
Sandwich Variations
I like that these sandwiches make a hearty meal, and changing the ingredients to suit your tastes is easy. Make it your way!
- Like a bit of heat to your sandwiches? Make it spicier by adding chili flakes, hot sauce, or jalapeños to the filling for extra heat.
- Banana peppers and mushrooms make a great addition to these sandwiches.
- Adding mayonnaise, mustard, or a special sauce like aioli or sriracha mayo can enhance the flavor of the sandwich.
How To Make Chicken Philly Sandwiches

Start by mixing your spices together. Mix the smoked paprika, salt, cumin, dried oregano, and black pepper in a small bowl.
Coat the thinly sliced chicken with the spice mixture until well-coated.

Cook the seasoned chicken slices in a skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through. Once done remove the chicken and set aside.
Add the thinly sliced onions, green bell peppers, and red bell peppers to the skillet and cook until the vegetables are softened and slightly caramelized. This usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes.
Then add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for about 35 seconds. Next stir in the Worcestershire sauce and deglaze the pan.

Add the chicken back to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir and cook for about 3 minutes or so to combine the flavors.
Now it's time to add the cheese. Turn the heat down to low and add the sliced Provolone cheese on top of the chicken and vegetables. Place lid over skillet and for a couple of minutes to allow the cheese to melt.
Add the cheesy chicken and vegetables to the hoagie rolls and serve!

Can I use frozen vegetables?
Yes, frozen sliced bell peppers and onions can be used as a time-saving alternative to fresh vegetables.
Recipe Substitutions
- Chicken Breast: Substitute with thinly sliced beef, pork, or turkey for a different flavor profile.
- Onion and Bell Peppers: Try other vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, or eggplant for a different taste and texture.
- Worcestershire Sauce: For a vegetarian option, use a soy sauce or balsamic vinegar to add depth of flavor.
- Provolone Cheese: Feel free to use other melting cheeses like mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss.
- Hoagie Rolls: Substitute with any large, sturdy bread like a baguette, ciabatta, or even large hamburger buns.
Make-Ahead, Storing and Freezing
Make-Ahead: You can cook the chicken and vegetables ahead of time and reheat them when ready to serve. However, it's best to assemble the sandwiches fresh to avoid soggy bread.
Store: Chicken Philly Sandwiches should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in a skillet or microwave before serving.
To Freeze: It's best to freeze it without the cheese and rolls, as they can become soggy or lose texture upon freezing and reheating. Let the chicken and vegetable mixture cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container or freezer Ziploc bag. Freeze for up to two months. Thaw the mixture in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat it in a skillet until hot. Serve with fresh cheese on toasted hoagie rolls for the best quality.

- 1 green bell pepper (thinly sliced)
- 1 red bell pepper (thinly sliced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 6 slices Provolone cheese
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, salt, cumin, dried oregano, and black pepper.
- Sprinkle the spice mixture over the thinly sliced chicken breast, ensuring each piece is well-coated.

- Reduce the heat to low and place the sliced Provolone cheese on top of the chicken and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the cheese melt for about 1-2 minutes.
- Open the hoagie rolls and place them on a serving platter or individual plates.
- Using a spatula, evenly distribute the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture among the hoagie rolls.
- Serve the Chicken Philly Sandwiches immediately while the filling is still hot and the cheese is melted.
