Ingredient Notes

See the printable recipe card below for all ingredients, specific measurements, and complete instructions.

Ingredients to make BBQ Chicken Drumsticks set out on the counter.
  • Chicken drumsticks: I love these because they stay juicy in the slow cooker. You can use bone-in thighs if you prefer.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder: Adds flavor without chopping, but you can use fresh garlic and onion if you have time.
  • Smoked paprika: Gives a hint of smokiness. Regular paprika works too, but you won’t get the smoky flavor without it.
  • Chili powder: Adds a mild kick. Adjust to your family’s taste.
  • Kosher salt: Brings out all the flavors and helps balance the sweetness of the barbecue sauce.
  • BBQ sauce: Use your favorite brand. I used Sweet Baby Ray’s, but any kind works.
  • Cooking spray: Helps prevent sticking.

How To Make Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

Let’s start by preparing the seasoning. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. This blend will give your drumsticks a delicious flavor base.

Next, rub the seasoning mix onto the drumsticks, making sure to coat them evenly. Don’t be afraid to use your hands – it’s the best way to get the seasoning into all the nooks and crannies.

Now, prepare your slow cooker. Spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking. This step is important for easy cleanup later.

Arrange the seasoned drumsticks in the slow cooker. Try to place them in even layers so they cook uniformly.

It’s time for the BBQ sauce. Pour 2 cups of the sauce over the drumsticks. Use a basting brush or tongs to make sure each piece is well coated. The sauce will infuse the chicken with flavor as it cooks.

Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook. If you’re short on time, cook on high for 3-4 hours. For a longer, slower cook, set it to low for 6-8 hours. The chicken is done when it’s tender and fully cooked through.

Once the cooking time is up, it’s time for the finishing touch. Preheat your broiler and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Carefully transfer the cooked drumsticks to the prepared baking sheet. Brush them with the remaining BBQ sauce. This extra layer will caramelize under the broiler, adding great flavor and texture.

Broil the drumsticks for 3-5 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning. You’re looking for the sauce to thicken and caramelize.

Serve your Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Drumsticks immediately while they’re hot and sticky.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Use wings: Substitute chicken wings for drumsticks. They’ll cook faster, so check them after 2-3 hours on low.
  • Make it spicy: Add cayenne pepper to the seasoning mix or use a spicy BBQ sauce.
  • Try thighs: Substitute chicken thighs for drumsticks. They’ll be just as tender and flavorful.

Storing and Freezing

Store: Leftover Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Drumsticks can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 days. To reheat, place the drumsticks on a microwave-safe plate and heat for 1-2 minutes, or until warmed through. You can also reheat them in the oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes for a crispier result.

Freeze: These drumsticks freeze well. Let them cool completely, then place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge, then warm in the oven at 350°F for about 20 minutes, or until heated through.

Recipe Tips

  • For extra flavor, season the drumsticks the night before and store them in the fridge. This allows the spices to penetrate the meat.
  • Try different BBQ sauces to change up the flavor. Hickory, honey, or spicy versions all work well.
  • For easy cleanup, use slow cooker liners. They’re especially helpful with sticky sauces like BBQ.
  • I cooked mine in a 6-quart slow cooker.

Can I make this recipe without a slow cooker?

Yes, you can make this in the oven. Place the seasoned drumsticks in a baking dish, pour over the BBQ sauce, and bake at 375°F for about 45-60 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Baste the chicken with the sauce a few times during cooking.
