Ingredient Notes
See printable recipe card below for all ingredients, specific measurements, and complete instructions.
Cake Ingredients:
Chocolate Cake Mix - Use your favorite brand of Chocolate cake mix.
Milk - I always recommend using whole milk when baking.
Cooking Oil - You can use vegetable or Canola oil.
Eggs - For this recipe you will need 2 large eggs.
Filling and Decorating Ingredients:
Butter - Use real butter, softened (not margarine) for best flavor.
Confectioners’ Sugar - Produces a smooth consistency for filling and frosting.
Milk - I recommend using whole milk.
Vanilla - For best flavor use pure vanilla extract.
Black Decorating Frosting - Perfect for making the eyes and smile on Snowman.
Orange Fondant - This is used to make the Snowman's carrot nose.
How To Make Snowman Whoopie Pies
Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or you can use a whoopie pie pan like this one from Wilton (affiliate link). Set aside.
Make The Cake: Use an hand held mixer or stand mixer to mix together the cake mix, milk, oil and eggs in a large bowl until blended. Don't overmix batter.
Use a 2-inch cookie scoop and place the scoops on your lined baking sheet, at least 1½ inches apart from each other.
Bake: Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on wire rack.
Make the Buttercream Filling: With an electric mixer beat butter, confectioners’ sugar, milk and vanilla on medium speed. Gradually increase to high. The buttercream is ready once the filling is smooth and combined.
Use one bowl of buttercream as the filling of your whoopie pies. Use an offset spatula or piping bag to add buttercream on the backside of one cake and then sandwich it with another.
With the remaining buttercream use a piping bag to frost the top of each whoopie pie, filling it out completely.
Make Snowman Nose: To make the snowmen’s "carrot" nose, shape your orange fondant into long, triangular shapes and place in the center of each frosted whoopie pie.
Add Eyes and Smile: Use the black decorating frosting to make some eyes and a smile.
Serve and enjoy. Happy holidays!
How To Store
Wrap individually in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. These are best served at room temperature.
Recipe Tips
- For a fancy bakery finish you can pipe the frosting evenly around inside the cookie instead of spreading with a spatula.
- Use a cookie scoop to make the cookies as uniform as possible.
- If you want a darker chocolate flavor use Devil's Food cake mix or Triple Chocolate Fudge.
