I make this blueberry lemonade constantly during summer months! It's become my favorite way to welcome friends who drop by on warm afternoons. Everyone always comments on the beautiful purple color first, then they taste it and immediately ask for the recipe.
What I love most is how versatile this drink is. For casual family dinners, I serve it in mason jars with fresh blueberries floating on top. When hosting something fancier, I rim the glasses with sugar and add lemon slices for a pretty presentation.
Kids will absolutely adore this drink, so don’t be surprised if they request it for backyard barbecues. I love that I can control the amount of sugar, making it much healthier than store-bought versions. If you love strawberries check out my Strawberry Lemonade.
Ingredient Notes
See the printable recipe card below for all ingredients, specific measurements, and complete instructions.

- Frozen blueberries: These work perfectly for this recipe because they break down easily when heated. You can absolutely use fresh blueberries instead if they're in season!
- Sugar: This recipe is flexible with sweetness levels. Start with less and add more to taste, especially if your blueberries are particularly sweet or tart.
- Lemon juice: Fresh-squeezed juice makes all the difference in this recipe. The bottled stuff just doesn't have the same bright flavor that makes this lemonade so refreshing.
How To Make This Blueberry Lemonade Recipe

First, combine frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan. Heat until the sugar dissolves and blueberries soften - you'll see them start to burst open and release their gorgeous purple color.
Next, remove from heat and mash the juicy berries with a potato masher or fork to release all their delicious flavor.
Strain the mixture through a mesh sieve into a 2-quart pitcher, pressing firmly to get every drop of that beautiful purple goodness.

Add your fresh lemon juice and remaining sugar to the pitcher, then pour in the 6 cups of water. Give everything a good stir until the sugar completely dissolves.
Finally, pour over ice and enjoy this refreshing homemade blueberry lemonade!

Storing
Your homemade blueberry lemonade keeps beautifully in the refrigerator! Just store it in an airtight pitcher for up to 4 days. The flavors come together overnight, so day 2 lemonade is actually even tastier than day 1!
Substitutions and Variations
- Add some fizz. Substitute Sprite, ginger ale, or club soda for half the water to create a sparkling blueberry lemonade that's extra refreshing on hot summer days.
- Try different berries. Replace blueberries with strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries for a completely different flavor profile and color.
- Use natural sweeteners. Substitute honey or maple syrup for the sugar to create a naturally sweetened version with subtle flavor notes.
- Make it sugar-free. Use stevia instead of sugar for a carb-friendly option that tastes just as refreshing without the added calories.
- Create a frozen version. Blend the prepared lemonade with extra ice for a slushy treat that's perfect for the hottest summer afternoons.
Recipe Tips
- If you're using fresh blueberries instead of frozen, add an extra minute or two of cooking time to help them break down completely.
- For a stunning layered effect, make regular lemonade separately and pour it over ice, then slowly pour in your blueberry syrup. It creates gorgeous purple swirls that wow guests!
- For summer parties, freeze some lemonade in ice cube trays to keep your pitcher cold without diluting the flavor.
- Make blueberry sugar for rimming glasses! Just blend dried blueberries with granulated sugar in a food processor until powdery, then dip moistened glass rims for an extra special presentation.
- Don't toss those blueberry solids after straining! They make an amazing topping for yogurt or oatmeal the next morning.
Can I make this recipe with bottled lemon juice?
Fresh lemon juice gives the best flavor, but bottled lemon juice will work in a pinch. If using bottled juice, start with 3/4 cup and adjust to taste, as bottled versions tend to be more concentrated and sometimes have a slightly different flavor.
How can I make this lemonade less sweet?
Just reduce the amount of sugar to match your preference. Start with just 1 cup total and taste before adding more. You can always stir in additional sugar if needed, but you can't take it out once it's dissolved!
Can I make a concentrated version to dilute later?
Absolutely! Make the recipe with just 2 cups of water instead of 6. Store this concentrate in the refrigerator and dilute with fresh water or sparkling water whenever you're ready to serve. This saves space in your fridge too!

This blueberry lemonade recipe is an absolute summer essential in my kitchen! The gorgeous purple color and perfect balance of sweet berries with tangy lemons create a drink that's both beautiful and delicious.
Whether you enjoy it as is, add some fizz, or even turn it into an adult beverage, this refreshing drink is bound to become your summertime favorite. So grab those blueberries and lemons, and in just 10 minutes, you'll be sipping on the most refreshing homemade treat imaginable!

This is our favorite drink to get in/near Acadia National Park. I will definitely be making this at home at least once this summer. YUM!

This sounds wonderful. I just happen to have all of the ingredients so I'm excited to try it. I'm going to try the concentrated version though because I always have bottled water to dilute. Thank you!
